25 Attempts Later… PiqueBlinders Bags a Gameweek Win

PiqueBlinders finally got their hands on a Footy9 Gameweek win in Gameweek 4, finishing on 29 points and taking the £50 prize. It was a close one too, with just two points separating them from second place.

Two maximum +8s did plenty of the damage. Brighton went to Coventry and smashed them 5-0, while Middlesbrough edged a mental seven-goal game against Norwich, winning 4-3. Both returned the maximum +8 and gave PiqueBlinders 16 points from just two of their nine picks.

Brighton weren’t exactly a popular shout either. Only four of the 34 Footy9 players backed them, while two went the other way and chose Coventry. They got proper stung with the -5 after Coventry conceded five without reply.

Middlesbrough had a few more backers, with 11 players fancying them against Norwich. Their 4-3 win brought another maximum +8 for PiqueBlinders, while the one player who backed Norwich ended up on the wrong side of the same game and took the -5.

There were plenty of points elsewhere in PiqueBlinders’ 9. Swansea, Bradford and Barnet all returned +3, while Chelsea and Sheffield Wednesday added +2 and +1 respectively. Bristol Rovers were the only pick to return nothing.

Sheffield Wednesday were about as close to a Footy9 banker as you could get this week. A massive 32 of the 34 players had them in their 9, but a 0-0 meant almost the entire field had to settle for +1. Bristol Rovers were coming off three straight wins before losing 2-0 at Grimsby, so anyone who fancied them to keep that run going was left disappointed.

Across PiqueBlinders’ nine teams there were 17 goals scored and nine conceded, giving them a Gameweek goal difference of +8. More importantly, it all added up to 29 points and enough to sneak the win by two.

And this one had been a while coming. PiqueBlinders had played 24 Footy9 gameweeks without a win before this one, making it first time lucky at attempt number 25. They’ve now picked 77 different teams across their two seasons playing Footy9, but Gameweek 4 is the one that finally delivered the £50.
